| I am not a typical
"nature girl". I don't wear khaki and hike in the
wilderness. I prefer indoor bathrooms and showers when we camp,
and I can't swim. I tried taking a swimming class in college. The
teacher felt so bad for me that she gave me a B, even though I
didn't learn to swim. I suppose if I HAD to save myself or one of
my kids it would all come back to me and I would be able to do it.
But, on the surface I am not an "outdoors person". I do,
however, love the wonder of nature. Seeing the beautiful variety
in the flowers, butterflies and leaves is inspiring. When I was at
my lowest after college; homesick, in a bad marriage and
emotionally beat down, I could go to a quiet lake or a park and be
at peace. I know we can debate forever on God and who He is to
each of us, but I think if we put all the dogma and theology aside
and just look at the wonder and beauty of nature we will get the
most important answers inside of us.
Being still and quiet is not easy. Our minds whirl with
activity. Our emotions are up and down. If you are feeling
overwhelmed and life just isn't making sense then take a minute to
be outside. Go somewhere where you can smell the fresh air and see
the trees. Sit on a bench or take a blanket, and sit on the grass.
Close your eyes and just be still. Sometimes it's just a nice
break from the stress of the day. Other times it may be the
silence you need to find the answers, and help you make decisions.
God doesn't speak in a thunderous voice like in the movies. Maybe
He speaks in a still, quiet thought that comes to us when we are
silent.
